A 29-year-old man from Safi has been remanded in custody after he pleaded not guilty to stealing a stereo and a generator, handling stolen property, driving without insurance and a licence and relapsing.

In pleas on bail, Police inspector Carlos Cordina told the court that the accused, Stefan Cutajar, was an untrustworthy character who was also charged with committing the crime during the operative period of a suspended jail term and breaching a probation order and bail conditions.

At one point, Magistrate Ian Farrugia asked the accused’s mother Maria, who was in the court room crying, to move to the front.

He told her that while he could understand her pain and suffering, he would be remanding her son in custody for his own good.
