Allcare Insurance Limited insisted yesterday it was justified in refusing to settle the medical bills of a man who suffered a heart attack while on holiday in the US.

In a judicial letter filed in the First Hall of the Civil Court, Allcare said the allegations made by Neville Azzopardi were “absolutely unfounded”. It said its refusal to pay was based on information provided by Mr Azzopardi and his doctor.

Mr Azzopardi, from St Paul’s Bay, filed a judicial letter on Monday saying that after he suffered a heart attack last December, his partner contacted the insurance firm which, in turn, asked her to get in touch with its global response office in the UK to discuss the payment of medical fees. This was done because the American hospital was demanding insurance information before any treatment could be given.

Following a life-saving operation and after Mr Azzopardi was released from hospital, they were informed that Allcare was not accepting liability or responsibility for the medical fees that ran into tens of thousands of dollars.

Lawyer Christine Calleja and legal procurator Silvana Vella represented Allcare.
