Alfred Sant's press conference yesterday has opened up all the electoral options for the Prime Minister, who can choose to hold an election anytime between March 1 and August 23, political observers noted yesterday.

The decision to call an election rests solely with Lawrence Gonzi, but Dr Sant's state of health had cast everything into a state of uncertainty, leaving many wondering how long his recovery period would be and whether it would have an impact on the announcement of the election.

One of the main issues for the Prime Minister was that he could not appear insensitive and call an election while Dr Sant was still recovering and had not yet made an appearance in public.

Yesterday it was declared that Dr Sant needs about another 10 days of convalescence. He is expected to deliver the closing speech at the MLP general conference on January 27.

Political observers noted that the press conference basically confirmed many of the rumours that were circulating about Dr Sant's state of health but stopped them from escalating further, thus quelling speculation within the party that there might be a change in leadership very soon.

An election campaign can last as little as five weeks but it can also be long drawn out and take up to three months.

Any Saturday from March 1 to August 23, except perhaps March 22, Easter Saturday, is now a candidate for election day.

The local council elections, which should be held on March 8, could be postponed and held with a later general election, as had happened with the elections for the European Parliament. Or the general election could be held on that date if it is decided to hold the two together. In the latter case an announcement would have to be made at least in early February.

Last Sunday, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi said that reports in various sections of the media that he was likely to call an election this week were "made up".
