The international airport in the Czech capital Prague has been renamed to honour the late president Vaclav Havel.

More than 82,000 Czechs signed a petition demanding the change, which was approved by the government.

Mr Havel was the dissident playwright who led the 1989 revolution that toppled four decades of communist rule before becoming the country's president.

The name change took place on the 76th anniversary of Mr Havel's birthday.

Mr Havel's widow, Dagmar, was present today at the ribbon-cutting ceremony.

Film-maker Fero Fenic came up with the plan after Mr Havel died on December 18 2011, aged 75.
