Malta International Airport has asked the police to investigate the actions of its former CEO Markus Klaushofer, the company has confirmed.

A company announcement on the Malta Stock Exchange did not specify what the alleged criminal act perpetrated by Mr Klaushofer was.

It said an internal investigation report prepared as part of the legal proceedings currently under way with the former CEO was sent to the police for further investigation.

Mr Klaushofer was dismissed from his post last January and he subsequently opened a case against the company at the Industrial Tribunal, claiming unfair dismissal.

In its counter reply the company claimed Mr Klaushofer was dismissed because he had divulged commercial secrets to third parties interested in buying MIA shares.

Mr Klaushofer has denied the charge insisting the company would not have offered him a golden handshake of €400,000 when it dismissed him. The former CEO refused the payout and later took the case to the tribunal.

MIA is contending Mr Klaushofer was offered the payout and the possibility to resign voluntarily to avoid causing him humiliation in front of the company’s board of directors.
