Air Malta is to operate its afternoon flights to London Heathrow and Gatwick today, after having been forced to cancel the morning flights because of an ash cloud over Britain.

The airline will also operate an extra flight to cater for passengers who were stranded this morning when both the Heathrow and Gatwick flights were cancelled. The extra flight will leave Malta at 9.20 p.m.

The airline said more details would be announced upon confirmation of slots.

Heathrow and Gatwick were closed overnight and only had limited service for most of the morning, before resuming full service at about noon.

The ash cloud also forced the closure of Amsterdam Schiphol airport for some hours. An Air Malta flight to Amsterdam was delayed by a few hours.

Earlier today, EasyJet cancelled its services to Malta from Gatwick and Manchester and Ryaniar cancelled a flight from Dublin.
