Air Malta is reviewing its animal handling procedures following a complaint by a man whose four-month-old Shetland sheepdog was left waiting in a box in the scorching sun for more than an hour and a half

The pup was recently unloaded from an aircraft which had just arrived from Gatwick, England and was left outdoors before being taken to the quarantine section, according to its owner, Christopher Attard.

Mr Attard, a dog breeder, said that when he saw this, he complained to Air Malta’s cargo section about the puppy’s treatment but he was lamely informed that they were waiting for a customs officer to collect the dog.

“Imagine a four-month-old puppy being left alone in the scorching sun in a box. This is certainly a case of animal cruelty and lack of concern for animal welfare,” he said.

“I do expect a better service from Air Malta, especially when one considers that the cargo fees on animal transfer are rather expensive compared to other airlines,” he said.

Describing the whole ordeal as an unfortunate experience, Mr Attard said it was unacceptable, especially when considering that there was only a five-minute drive to the quarantine section.

Air Malta meanwhile said it had taken note of the case and has already been in contact with Mr Attard.

It said discussions were under way with the Customs Department and Veterinary Services to revise the animal handling procedure and ensure the least possible inconvenience.

The Maltese National Canine Federation had also condemned the incident and called for clear guidelines and regulations to avoid similar incidents.

By law, any animal that is imported must spend at least three weeks in quarantine to prevent the spread of disease.
