The management of Air Malta is playing a dangerous game through its interpretation of the last in first out policy, the General Workers' Union said.

It said in a statement that through its actions, the management was preparing the way to accommodate people who had served the airline for less time than others.

The management, the GWU said, had issued applications for the filling of 'new' grades most of which already existed, especially in ground handling.

It was just changing the name of the grade to accommodate certain people.

The union had made it clear from the beginning that it would not allow for workers to be dismissed not according to the last in first out policy. Correspondence on the matter was currently being exchanged between the union, the management and the finance minister.

The management of Air Malta was, however, trying whatever was possible to escape the provisions of the law.

Such manoeuvres were creating frustration and increasing tension among workers, the union said.
