Air Malta yesterday signed a code share agreement with BMI on flights between Malta and the UK.

The agreement, which comes into effect today, allows the two airlines to share flights operated by Air Malta to and from the UK, Brussels, Amsterdam and its Gatwick -to-Catania service. In turn, BMI will use Air Malta's code and flight numbers on its flights to Heathrow, Manchester, Brussels and Amsterdam.

The agreement also offers new flight connections between Malta and Aberdeen, Edinburgh, Glasgow, Dublin, Leeds Bradford, Belfast, the East Midlands and the Durham Tees Valley. Air Malta's chief officer commercial officer, Brock Friesen said code share agreements are proving to be essential to increase flight connections and accessibility to Malta even from markets that are not served with direct flights.

He said other code share agreements should be announced soon.
