Air Malta has called on the police to investigate "serious allegations" which it said were made by made by head of the pilots' union during a meeting with the leader of the Opposition.

Speaking on cargo services during the meeting on June 10, Capt. Domenic Azzopardi,  reportedly said: “We want to know that people using the service are paying for it. There is €200 million in turnover. Someone is not paying for the service they are getting. The planes are always full of cargo. Where is the money going?”

These allegations where never substantiated or withdrawn by Capt. Azzopardi, the airline said.

It said the allegations were unfounded and were solely aimed to tarnish the reputation of the company and its employees.

"The company reserves the right to take further steps following the results of the investigations."
