Dingli Swallows 1
Mosta 0

Veteran Jeremy Agius was the hero of Dingli Swallows yesterday after scoring the decisive goal in a 1-0 win over Mosta.

Thanks to this success, Dingli have edged closer to gaining their first ever promotion to the Premier League.

The Swallows are sharing top spot with Pietà, five points above Mosta and Vittoriosa and seven points ahead of St Patrick.

The first half was a balanced affair with Dingli failing to trouble the Mosta defence despite seeing more of the ball. It was Mosta who created the first scoring chance but Steve Borg headed wide.

On the half hour, Borg tested Dingli goalkeeper Jeffrey Farrugia with a shot from a Melvin Farrugia cross. But it was Dingli who broke the deadlock on 34 minutes.

Agius passed to Etienne Farrugia who failed to beat his immediate marker but the ball rolled back into the path of the former Valletta forward who rifled the ball home from the edge of the area.

Mosta rallied. Borg went close with another header that dropped inches wide.

After the change of ends, Mosta coach Michael Molzahn brought on Gilbert Camilleri and Carlos Camenzuli in a bid to add some flair to his attack.

Twelve minutes into the second half, Camilleri wasted a golden opportunity to level matters for Mosta when hitting wide after receiving from Gianluca Calabretta.

Mosta continued to press forward but Dingli were dangerous on the counter. On 67 minutes, Agius fired over following a fine move by Uchanna Anywanna.

Minutes later, Dingli again broke on the counter as Kurt Formosa released Farrugia but the latter missed, much to the frustration of team-mate Chris Ciappara who was unmarked.

Mosta tried to salvage a draw but lacked punch up front.
