An after school programme to help children who are resident at St Joseph's Home in Sta Venera and who may have fallen behind in their schoolwork because of their background was launched this afternoon.

The programme, which is for three years, is being funded by HSBC, Vodafone and Island Caterers.

Through it, the residents who needed the assistance would get three hours of one to one study on subjects, such as Maltese, Englih, mathematics, literacy and numeracy.

It was hoped that the programme would eventually help the students prepare for their "O" level examinations.

Home director Fr Frankie Cini hoped the programme would build the confidence and aspirations of the boys.

There are currently 16 boys at the home, aged between eight and 18.
