A Spanish man has been handed a suspended sentence after he admitted to attacking a police officer who intervened when an argument over a broken table in a bar got out of hand.

Enric Sala Codina, 46, also pleaded guilty to being drunk in public and to breaching the peace.

The incident occurred in Tower Road, Sliema, early on Tuesday.

Magistrate Aaron Bugeja was informed that the police intervened when the argument escalated.

An officer was pushed and suffered injuries to his shoulder.

The magistrate sentenced him to three months in jail, suspended for a year, and fined him €1,000.

Police Inspector Jonathan Ransley had called on the court to get the message across that “Malta is not a jungle”.

Lawyers Giannella de Marco and Gianluca Caruana Curran were defence counsel.
