An AFM search and rescue launch this morning evacuated an Italian man who was stung by a fish and fell unconscious while fishing off a yacht off Malta. To compound problems, the yacht suffered engined problems as it was heading to port at speed.

The launch Melita I linked up with the yacht, took the patient on board and conveyed him to a waiting ambulance on the quay at Bugibba.

The vessel was about 20 nautical miles from Grand Harbour.

The 53-year-old Lithuanian  was transferred on board the Melita II and conveyed to Haywharf base. The patient was then taken to Mater Dei Hospital by an awaiting ambulance for further medical treatment.
