The Armed Forces of Malta seized thousands of contraband cigarettes when they stopped a Maltese-registered fishing boat a few miles off the coast yesterday morning.

The operation started at sunrise when the boat was spotted “not operating according to normal procedures” in territorial waters, an AFM spokesman said.

Army personnel boarded the vessel and found some 40 boxes containing thousands of cigarettes.
