The Maritime Squadrom of the Armed Forces of Malta this morning berthed its flagship - the Diciotti-class P-61, at Mgarr Harbour, for its first ever open day in Gozo.

The day was organised as part of the army's 40th anniversary celebrations. Stands featuring weapons and equipment displays, as well as information on the units represented and their respective roles and duties in the AFM were set up.

They were visited by, among others, acting President Anton Tabone and Gozo Minister Giovanna Debono who were shown around by Commander Brig. Martin Xuereb.

A casualty-recovery demonstration was performed midstream in the harbour between scheduled ferry-boats trips.

In it, a simulated person-in-distress was aided by an AFM Air Wing rescue-swimmer and both were then recovered by a purposely dispatched rescue-helicopter.

Tomorrow, an open day is being held at Luqa Barraks from 11 a.m.
