A 48-year-old Pole died this morning after he found himself in difficulty while diving off Wied iż-Żurrieq this morning.

He was one of four divers who found themselves in difficulty and were rescued by the Armed Forces of Malta in bad weather conditions late this morning.

The AFM said people who spotted seven divers, who appeared to be in difficulty, from the shore contacted the AFM.

Three made their way to shore while the remaining four divers were in distress.

They were winched by the AFM rescuers to a helicopter. The Pole, who was unconscious, was immediately given medical assistance by the AFM rescuers. He was taken to Mater Dei Hospital by ambulance where he died later.

An inquiry is being held.
