Diamond Flight Training and the St Nicholas College Mtarfa Boys Secondary School today launched a new aero club, an extrac-curricular activity for students.

Speaking at the launch at the airport this morning, headmaster Jean Pierre Micallef said the initiative was one of 22 extra-curricular activities.

After receiving more than 70 applications for this new activity, Mr Micallef said 15 students have been chosen to have a taste of the aeronautical field, which includes actual flying and tours around the airport and its facilities.

He said lectures will also be given by a qualified pilot every week and students will be supplied with educational material by the flight school.

Mr Micallef also thanked Parliamentary Secretary Clyde Puli, who was also present at the launch, for his "relentless efforts to help the school make a quantum leap".

Describing it as a unique and innovative project, Marco Ciliberti, director of Diamond Flight Training, said this was historical day because this was the first time a state school was giving its students the opportunity to gain aviation knowledge.
