Alternattiva Demokratika is the only party that can guarantee the elimination of the clientelism system that has held back the Gozitan economy, leader Harry Vassallo said yesterday.

Dr Vassallo said during a news conference that AD was the only party which fought for the protection of areas such as Ramla l-Ħamra. He mentioned the pressure by AD in favour of preserving the country's heritage, and the need for parties to start thinking of new and modern jobs for the Gozitans in Gozo.

"Only in parliament can Alternattiva guarantee the protection of these most beautiful places in our country. We are convinced that if we will have another Government managed by just one political party, all these battles will have to start again from scratch," said Dr Vassallo. The party presented over 100 proposals to create modern, creative and sustainable jobs in Gozo. Later in the day, AD called for the better management of Malta's valleys, such as Chadwick Lakes, to ensure the protection of the island's natural flora and fauna.

Dr Vassallo said that the area of Chadwick Lakes, or Wied Qlejja, had been abandoned and noted that apart from indigenous plant species there were invasive species that were competing with typical Maltese flora.

Speaking during a press conference at Chadwick Lakes, Dr Vassallo introduced guest speaker, ecologist Alfred Baldacchino.

"This place needs better management," Mr Baldacchino stressed, as he went on to point out a broken dam that led to the loss of some of the precious 40 million gallons of water that passed through the valley each winter.

Dr Vassallo explained that AD insisted on better management of such areas to safeguard diversity, ensure a better understanding of Malta's environment, and ensure that future generations enjoyed this environment while abiding by EU regulations.
