Alternattiva Demokratika has welcomed the news that there were 14 bids for Malta Shipyards. It said it hoped that workers would be offered decent working conditions and that the yards become viable.

Michael Briguglio, spokesman for Social and Economic Development, said that it was interesting to note that bids were received from both local and foreign sources, ranging from Europe to Asia, in a time of global economic crisis.

"In itself, this confirms the value of the shipyards. AD sincerely hopes that the various sections of Malta Shipyards will become viable whilst offering decent job conditions for its workers. In this regard, we also sincerely hope that trade-union involvement will be given full space in this process."

Party leader Arnold Cassola said the news regarding the shipyards offered hope at a time when many workers were facing difficulties and loss of jobs.
