(Adds government reaction)

Alternattiva Demokratika this afternoon called on the Prime Minister to explain reports in the Italian media that Italian Prime Minister Silvio Berlusconi may be considering Malta, Albania and Montenegro as suitable sites for nuclear power plants.

Carmel Cacopardo, Alternattiva Demokratika spokesman on sustainable development in a statement referred to Dr Gonzi's talks with Sig Berlusconi last week and a report in the Italian newspaper Il-Sole 24 Ore.

"Whilst our party hopes that this is pure speculation on the part of the author, we consider that it is necessary for the Prime Minister to confirm or otherwise the said statement," Mr Cacopardo said.

The government in a statement said the setting up of a nuclear power station was never discussed.
