The Bill to set up a Commissioner for standards in public life should be approved immediately as this would enable the Commissioner to investigate any suspicion of lack of ethics on the part of any politician, Alternattiva Demokratika chairman Arnold Cassola said.

In a statement, he referred to the Nationalist Party protest on Sunday saying that as a party in Parliament and a party of the masses, the PN had every legitimate right to use its parliamentary and mass party means at its disposal.

“We are not the PN and we use our methods. The PN is calling for a mass protest against corruption. However, we believe that the PN is not credible because of a number of events concerning exponents of the PN in the recent past,” Prof. Cassola said.

He added that it was a fact that Energy Minister Konrad Mizzi’s affair gave rise to serious doubts on his behaviour. This concerned ethics and morality in politics.

“Apart from the fact that we do not accept that Minister Mizzi takes people for a ride, for us the absolute priority is that the bill to set up a Commissioner for standards in public life is approved immediately, so that the Commissioner would be able to investigate any suspicion of lack of ethics on the part of any politician.”
