Actor Nicolas Cage has been arrested in New Orleans on charges of domestic abuse battery and disturbing the peace, said authorities in the United States.

The Orleans Parish Sheriff's office said Cage was booked into the Orleans Parish Prison at 11.30am today.

Cage has been a frequent visitor to New Orleans where he has owned property and shot movies in the past.

New Orleans police did not immediately disclose details about his arrest. An agent for Cage did not immediately return a phone call today.
