A Marsa resident was yesterday remanded in custody after pleading not guilty to the attempted murder of an acquaintance at his apartment on Thursday.

Noel Farrugia, 31, from Marsa, was charged with attempting to murder 40-year-old Omar Faiz El Sallak, a Libyan married to a Maltese woman.

The court heard how the two were in Mr Farrugia's apartment in Racecourse Street, Marsa when an argument broke out at around 10 p.m. and the two came to blows.

The argument escalated and Mr El Sallak was stabbed in the chest with a kitchen knife. He was taken to hospital in a critical condition and is still in Intensive Care.

Mr Farrugia was also charged with seriously injuring Mr El Sallak.

He did not request bail and was remanded in custody.

Police Inspectors Daniel Zammit and Robert Vella prosecuted while lawyer Edward Gatt appeared for the accused.
