An Italian accused of corrupting a minor was yesterday remanded in custody after he was returned to Malta through a European Arrest Warrant.

The man was charged on April 26 of 2006 and was granted bail the following year under several conditions, one of them being that he could not leave the island.

However, in 2011 he did not turn up for proceedings and the police issued an arrest warrant.

He was extradited to Malta from Spain on Friday and has been remanded. He will appear again in court on August 17.

During the hearing yesterday, the man, who had escaped to Chile, said he was sorry for what he had done. He said he flew to Spain with the intention of going to Italy but he was held there and returned to Malta.

Inspector Roderick Spiteri and Sylvana Briffa led the prosecution.
