Traffic accidents in the first three months increased by 10.1 per cent, compared to the corresponding quarter last year, according to official figures released yesterday.

A total of 3,572 accidents were reported in the first three months of 2015.

In total, there were 362 traffic casualties, of which 207 involved drivers. Of these, 176 injuries were reported as slight while 31 were grievous.

Ten passengers and 23 pedestrians also suffered grievous injuries, while 86 passengers and 34 pedestrians were injured slightly. A passenger and a pedestrian died.

The largest number of casualties (76.5 per cent) was caused by passenger cars, followed by motorcycles (16.6 per cent) and goods-carrying vehicles (5.5 per cent).

Most accidents occurred from noon to 3pm, with 796 cases, or 22.3 per cent of the total during that period, followed by the period from 9am to noon, with 745 cases.
