A 45-year-old man was this morning fined €2,000 for seriously injuring a woman involuntarily in a traffic accident in September 2009.

Francis Cutajar had hit Elizabeth Mallia in front of the Dolmen Hotel in Qawra.

He told the court that he had stopped his wife and children at the hotel and wanted to park his car.

He had to overtake to drive away as there were many minibuses in the area and although he had seen the victim, he still hit her as he was overtaking.

Ms Mallia said she was hit as she was placing her left leg on the pavement in front of the hotel.

Magistrate Claire Stafrace Zammit said this was a classic case of an accused failing to keep a proper lookout. This led to him miscalculating when he overtook the minibus.
