Spontaneity, directness, emotional intensity and large scale characterise Mark Sagona’s latest abstract exhibition.
The Gozitan artist’s collection, entitled Diaries of Existence was produced in 2007 and 2008. It marks a definite break with his past works characterised by a renewed self-confidence and ease.
Despite their size, the paintings are very intimate in nature and allow the viewer to experience the strong moments that sparked their creation.
In conjunction with the exhibition, Midsea Books Publishers has published a 40-page full-colour book which illustrates and documents the production of the works, the exhibition and the artist. The book is complemented with critical essays by Prof. Joe Friggieri, head of the department of Philosophy at the University of Malta and by Sandro Debono, senior curator at the National Museum of Fine Arts, Valletta, as well as photography by Daniel Cilia. The catalogue will be available from leading bookshops and the National Museum of Fine Arts.
Diaries of Existence will be inaugurated on Friday at the Loggia of the National Museum of Fine Arts, South Street, Valletta. It will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 5 p.m. (last admission 4.30 p.m.) until December 14.
