The maximum air temperature is currently seven degrees Celsius above the observed normal for this time of the year, the Meteorological Office said.

It said in a statement that presently, a high pressure anticyclone over the western and central Mediterranean was leading to light and variable winds. The subsidence of warm dry air from higher atmosphere levels was significantly contributing to the currently high air temperatures.

Incoming weather data showed that this steady high temperature was expected to level off on Monday due to the expected increase in relative humidity.

However, the heat stress index was expected to increase because of the high temperature and humidity, leading to some general discomfort. The air pressure would also continue to increase until Monday after which it was expected to fall slightly.
