I refer to Martin Spinelli’s letter ‘Untie doctors’ hands’ (June 5).

While I am unable to comment on how the anti-abortion laws have been interpreted in Ireland, the distorted fact is that the Savita case was justified because of the Catholic faith and morals condemning abortion.

Even in Catholic morality and ethics, the saving of the mother’s life is always justified.

This is called the double-effect principle.
