Opposition leader Alfred Sant yesterday asked Justice Minister Tonio Borg in Parliament to list the number of cases of abortions or alleged abortions that ended in court in the last 10 years, and their outcome.

Replying, Dr Borg said that since 1993 five persons were investigated by an inquiring magistrate and three were arraigned in court.

In one case, decided on June 23, 1993, the accused was given a two-year jail term suspended for four years. In another case, decided on November 5, 1998, two persons were sentenced to 18 months imprisonment, suspended for a year.

No procedures were started against another two persons investigated in 1998 for assisting in an abortion because they died before being arraigned.

The minister said other information on persons who were accused but acquitted, was still being collected.
