Żabbar Masters began their 2016/17 campaign on a top note after seeing off the strong challenge offered by Marsa White Stars Barilla 4-3 in the final of the Tools Plane Pre-Season Tournament.

In the semi-finals, Marsa had the better of Birkirkara Masters on penalties while Żabbar ousted Wardija who had been regarded as favourites to win the tournament.

The final was a balanced and entertaining affair.

Steve Aquilina hit a brace for Żabbar whose other goals came from Sandro Braziliano and Eric Saliba.

Former Floriana players Kurt Formosa and Mario Caruana, and Aronne Pendry were the scorers for Marsa.

At the end of the game, Mario Meli, the president of Masters Football (Malta), presented the winners’ trophy to Żabbar captain Michael Zerafa.

Tartan friendly

Meanwhile, Malta’s masters national team will be playing a friendly match against Tartan Army Select FC, a Scottish team made up of players aged 35 to 45.

Tartan Army Select FC travel to all away games of the Scottish national team.

The friendly is scheduled for this Saturday, the eve of Malta’s opening 2018 World Cup qualifier against Scotland, at the Luxol Stadium.

Kick-off is at 5pm.
