An old kettle, a computer casing and an aquarium are among the unconventional settings for nativity scenes on display at St Joseph the Worker parish centre in Birkirkara.

The 55 members of the Għaqda Wirjiet San Ġużepp Ħaddiem, whose ages range from 14 to 66, started working on the 94 cribs being exhibited in August.

“Members work on their own crib, and then in the final weeks we meet up to set up everything,” organiser Vince Mifsud said. He pointed out that, for the past 13 years, the group had always striven to build cribs that were unusual, and this year was no different.

One of his own cribs is built inside a worn-out kettle. “I was homesick and I came across one of those old kettles and, instead of throwing it away, I decided to try and create something out of it,” he said.

The exhibition, which runs until December 27, also features traditional cribs of varying sizes.
