The Georgian Sinfonietta is the State Chamber Orchestra of Georgia. It is a prestigious orchestra that has played in some of the greatest halls in the world, including the Concertgebouw in Amsterdam, as well as with many famous conductors and soloists.

“The idea of collaborating with them in Malta came to me after my first encounter with the orchestra in November, when I was invited to conduct again in Georgia.

“Its members are relatively young, their playing is full of energy and enthusiasm and they perform in many festivals and concerts on a weekly basis.

“The Georgian Sinfonietta members all have baroque instruments and they are the first baroque orchestra in the Caucasus.

“Nevertheless, when we played Bach, we thought it more fitting to use modern instruments and, during our concert in Georgia, during which we played classical and baroque music from the 20th century, they proved to be equally interesting in all styles.

“The programme is varied and consists of music from Norway, Austria, Germany, Georgia and Brazil. This is both a Mothers’ Day, as well as a family concert.

“ It is a programme of serious music with works from the 18th and 20th centuries, which, nevertheless, is accessible to the public.

“It also aims to make the most of the talents of the world-class orchestra and the two virtuoso soloists and that was one of the reasons we put Mendelssohn concerto for violin, piano and strings at the end of the programme.”
