Scandinavian travel company Sunlife Style Resorts will be donating 24,000 trees to the organisers of the Tree 4 U afforestation campaign by October next year.

Ten thousand trees have already been planted as part of the project to rehabilitate Wied Blandun in Fgura.

Rural Affairs and Environment Minister George Pullicino said yesterday the donation will continue to give impetus to the campaign for which 56,000 trees have been donated over the past three years.

The new trees will be planted at Wied Blandun, at a new afforestation site at Madliena, and some at Buskett.

Company representative Nina Stastny said the company made a commitment to plant a tree in Malta for each tourist it sends to the Mediterranean.

This is to compensate for the carbon dioxide pollution caused by air travel, she said.

Mr Pullicino said Wied Blandun was scarred in the 1970s when in order to save money it was decided to build a road across the valley instead of a bridge.
