I’m sure that growing up, many of us fantasised about having Jedi-like abilities to be able to control things with a simple hand movement. For a long time this seemed like a distant possibility – however, with the introduction of Microsoft’s Kinect interface and the more recent smart televisions, gesture control is now possible.
Flutter is a free Windows app that relies on your webcam input and provides you with the possibility to use hand gestures for controlling your music. You can start and stop music simply by showing the flat palm of your hand to your webcam.
To play your music using Flutter, you need to use either iTunes, Spotify, Winamp or Windows Media Player. By installing the Google Chrome plug-in you can also control YouTube, Pandora, Netflix and Grooveshark.
Starting or stopping music and moving to the previous or next track is the only thing Flutter can currently do, but I’m pretty sure that the developers are also working on a version that increases and decreases the volume.
As it is, if you’re sitting in front of your computer typing away, and you want to change the track, then you have to stop typing, find iTunes and then the track – this all takes time.
With Flutter, all you need to do is stop typing and hold up a hand in front of the webcam. There’s no need to click the mouse or to search for tracks because your webcam and Flutter do it all for you.
