Given the recent feature in The Times regarding the temporary suspension of the Saluting Battery below the Upper Barrakka Gardens, I thought readers might be interested in this photograph of the Saluting Battery in use in 1898. Governor Sir Lyon Fremantle (1894-99) can be seen standing (centre).

Since this photo is dated 1898 it may, in fact, record the salute given to the German Emperor, Kaiser William II, who arrived in the Grand Harbour on board his personal yacht, the Hohenzollern, in November of that year.
