Since its inception in January 1990, the Amadeus Chamber Choir, under the direction of Brian Cefai, has established an enviable reputation.

Its repertoire is very vast, ranging from 16th century polyphonic to contemporary music and it is this versatility, together with the dynamism and dedication from both the choristers and their director which has won the choir acclaim on the island.

The choir, which is this year celebrating its 20th anniversary, boasts of having performed at the Manoel Theatre, the Mediterranean Conference Centre, St John’s Co-Cathedral and St Paul’s Metropolitan Cathedral, among other churches and music halls, as well as in England, Scotland, Germany, Hungary, Austria, the Czech Republic, Poland and Italy.

Four years ago Mozart’s Requiem was performed by the choir, conducted by their director Brian Cefai, at the magnificent Cathedral of Monreale with the Teatro Massimo musicians bringing an end to a famous festival.

Earlier this year in celebration of the 250th anniversary of Luigi Cherubini the choir presented a passionate interpretation of his alluring Requiem in C Minor.

While continuing with its tradition of choral performances, the Amadeus Chamber Choir is once more presenting its annual Yuletide concert, A Prelude to Christmas, with choir, soloists and orchestra filled with traditional carols and contemporary choral works to fill our hearts with warm Christmas cheer.

This year’s concert is being held at St John’s Co-Cathedral, in collaboration with the St John’s Co-Cathedral Foundation and in aid of The Richmond Foundation on December 17 at 7.30 p.m.

The choir, soloists and orchestra will be directed by Brian Cefai and Michelle Castelletti. The evening will be packed with tiny musical gems such as the evergreen O Holy Night, Carol of the Drum, When You Believe, In Dulci Jubilo and many others.

Twenty years down the line, The Amadeus Chamber Choir has gone from strength to strength, touring in mainland Europe and performing unique concerts in Malta.

Events which the choir is looking forward to during 2011 include the performing of a concert under the title Rock Me Amadeus being presented in June and a trip to Estonia in September, where the choir will perform in various venues.
