The 360 Degrees publications have become synonymous with high quality images that open windows onto the remote as well as the better known places and buildings scattered around the Maltese Islands.

However, these lush hardbacks are not merely coffee-table publications solely composed of pretty pictures, and no documentation. They are also carefully researched and pieced together with accuracy to reflect each of the accompanying plates.

The most recent publication by Miranda in the 360 Degrees series comes in an unprecedented two volumes, titled Legacy of an Order in Malta, which have been divided to reflect the vast amount of architecture, monuments and public spaces dating to the time of the Knights. Volume One spans the period between 1530-1680 and Volume Two concentrates on the years 1631-1798.

The books can be bought separately or together; either or, the publications come in the customary handsome and sturdy case which tie them in with the rest of the series.

The only aspect that has been omitted from the latest books is the religious. The number of churches and chapels found in Malta and Gozo is so high that it would require a publication on its own, explained Eddie Aquilina, Mr 360 Degrees himself.

These are not academic books for architects but an exercise in aesthetics, he said.

These two books constitute the 11th and 12th editions in the growing series and have both been written by Joseph F. Grima, while Prince and Grandmaster Frà Matthew Festing has aptly provided the foreword. All the photographs have been taken by Enrico Formica, who flies here six to eight times a year to capture Malta in her multifaceted beauty. The two volumes have been dedicated to the late Grandmaster Frà Andrew Bertie.

Next year, Miranda will be celebrating its 20th anniversary, and for the occasion the publishing house has an array of exciting events in store, which will be announced in the near future. Next year will also see the publication of another two books in the 360 Degrees series.

The third edition of the Miranda flagship Malta and Gozo 360 Degrees will be out in June using new photos reflecting the annual events and festivities tied to the four seasons. And the St John's Co-Cathedral 360 Degrees will also be published later on.

Other books in the pipeline pertain to views of the islands from the sea and treasures and objets d'art found in Malta.

The Legacy of an Order in Malta books are available from all leading bookshops.
