Gabriel Caruana is the title of Kite Group’s latest publication. This new book focuses on Gabriel’s artistic evolution during the last five years and presents a collection of 60 unpublished works of art.

The book was launched at The Mill in Ganu Street, Birkirkara. The event was attended by several artists, Gabriel Caruana’s friends and Melitensia collectors.

Kite Group is presenting a 160-page hardbound publication in two editions. The hardbound edition comes in a selection of four colours, but the true innovation is found in the collector’s edition. With a limited number of copies, the special edition presents uniquely hand-drawn and signed covers by Gabriel Caruana himself. Each limited-edition cover is a work of art.

The book also presents two critical essays: one by Gabriel’s long-time friend Prof. Richard England and the other by art critic Charlene Vella.

Focusing on the current state of Gabriel’s creativity, Prof. England describes him as a “much loved and valued institution of our islands’ art scene and a veritable icon of Maltese art, Caruana remains the doyen of Malta’s Modern Art Movement. He has again proved himself a unique cartographer in offering an innovative series of works carved and etched in his unique personal alphabet. Thank you, Gabriel, for yet another of your magical gifts.”

The true innovation is found in the collector’s edition

Commenting on the works of art that adorn this publication, Prof. England writes on, “Gabriel Caruana’s recent work moves the heart after first of all regaling the eyes. Perhaps some advice is useful; best that one treats them like royalty – let them speak first, for they do somehow retain a hint of the regal.”

Charlene Vella, guest contributor to the publication, adds that “Gabriel Caruana’s achievements should continue to be celebrated, as is the aim of this publication. Caruana will continue to be acknowledged as a forerunner for the promotion of Modern and Contemporary Art, a harbinger of change, a man of bold character, who has been a great teacher, family man and artist, and all in all a very admirable man who is still today in very good spirits.

“The Maltese artistic scene still owes much to Gabriel. Acquiring his own kiln in 1970 was a bold step forward, an example to others who after him were not afraid to follow their artistic dream. His message to others through his art is clear: take the risk and be the brave non-conformist with a clear mission and vision.”

Through this publication Kite Group continues to deliver high-quality Melitensia books. After a number of best-selling publications, Kite Group this year has entered into the world of art through this public-ation and another one that will focus on Antonio Sciortino, which will be launched next month.

The new publication Gabriel Caruana does not only set itself as the definitive publication on the latest transition of this talented and pioneering artist, but also establishes a first in Maltese publishing through its innovative take on uniquely-designed book covers.
