An Open Day organised by Heritage Malta tomorrow will offer the public free access and guided tours to Fort St Elmo and the National War Museum, re-enactments, activities for children, talks, and war-themed snacks. Originally intended as a war machine, Fort St Elmo today serves as an impressive historical military building with unobstructed panoramic views of the Grand Harbour and the surrounding towns and villages. The fort also hosts the National War Museum which houses a superb collection of artefacts that go back to prehistoric times.

There will be guided tours with the curator of Fort St Elmo at 9.15am (in Maltese) and 1pm (in English). Meeting point the Piazza D’Armi and guided tours with the curator of the National War Museum at 11 am (in English) and 14.45pm (in Maltese). Meeting point – Piazza D’Armi.

Re-enactments at the Piazza D’Armi take place at 9.30am – Legio X; 10.30am – Show of Arms; 11.30am – In Guardia; 12.30pm – Show of Arms; 1.30pm – Historical Re-Enactment Group of Malta and 2.30pm – Battlefront.

Children’s activities include  ‘Make your own armour’ (for ages 5+) at 10.15am and 2.15pm, at the sacristy, next to the Church of St Anne. Children are to be accompanied by an adult at all times.

There will also be a talk by the George Cross Island Association on ‘The Siege of 1940-1942’ at 3.30pm in the Conference Room and an exhibition on ‘Rations and food’ at the Church of St Anne.

Events at Fort St Elmo run from 9am to 5pm. The last admission is at 4.30pm. For more information, visit www.heritagemalta.org.
