As part of celebrations marking the start of the Chinese New Year of the Pig, Spazju Kreattiv in collaboration with the China Cultural Centre in Malta, is screening two episodes of the second season of A Bite of China at St James Cavalier, Valletta, today at 7.30pm.
This popular 2012 documentary explores the relationship between China’s people and their local food. Director Chen Xiaoqing said that by featuring China’s food, he hopes the documentary will show audiences China’s traditions and social changes, as well as the unbending, frugal and tenacious character of the Chinese people.
The first episode, entitled Mystery, is set in China’s distant forests, rivers, grasslands and deserts. These hard-to-reach places hide the unknown taste, and humans and nature work together to make the ancient tastes continue to this day.
The second episode is entitled Three Meals, a reference to the common dietary system for human beings. While the same system is followed in China the different meals and the different rhythm of life has created different life experiences.
Foods featured include Tianjin pancake fruit, Chongqing breakfast noodles, Guangzhou fancy morning tea, Xiangxiang salted duck eggs and meat. The documentary features the stories about the people behind this variety of foods – while some pursue success, others pursue inner peace.
