Although weekends are packed with sports, the level of emotions depends on a number of variables. We're after one such weekend (actually we're still at one of those weekends) where the various events have contributed towards a rather amazing, highly adrenaline charged sporting weekend.

It was a weekend where one could see in action, the reds, the blues, the greens, the whites, the nerazzuri... It was all about colours, which reminded me of one of the highlights of my stay in Milan when in great company; I had the mouth-watering "Rainbow Roll" at the Mizu Japanese Restaurant in Corso Sempione. The way it was described by Diego, our host, focused on the colours of the various items. I will try to emulate that...sure Diego won't mind.

The Blues

Chelsea and Manchester United gave life to one of the most important events of the weekend. It was a game which saw the Blues gain three points and catch the Red Devils at the top of the Premier League. A lot has been said about the game. Even more has been said on what happened after.

The red devils, didn't only lose the sole leadership, but apparently some of their players while warming down (ironically) lost control of their temper. The FA is looking into the CCTV tapes to see what happened. We'll have to wait and see.

It was interesting to see Ballack and Shevchenko being both decisive at the goal mouth. Ballack hit the net twice (one through a penalty) and Shevchenko... yes he was decisive in keeping a dangerous ball away from goal which is not the Sheva I used to know, but still decisive. I believe that if Chelsea will win the league, Shevchenko's clearance would be one of the reasons.

The Reds

It was the weekend that marked the return of Formula 1 to Europe. The Maranello Reds got the second one-two of the season. The new aerodynamic features of the car helped Ferrari to have a great weekend both in qualifying and also during the actual race. Finnish Kimi Raikkonen stretched his lead to nine points dominating the race as he dominated the pole-position qualifying heats, setting a record for the Circuit de Catalunya as the track with the longest run of successive winners from pole position.

Another Finnish however could have easily dominated the headlines for the wrong reasons. Heikki Kovalainen had to be flown to hospital following a high speed crash. The Finn's thumbs-up, on his way to the helicopter, was a sign of relief for the thousands at Montmelo and for the millions in front of their television at home.

The Greens

Celtic's 3-2 derby win against Rangers has given the greens a five point lead against the same Rangers, which on the other hand have three games in hand. So it is going to be an emotion-packed end of season in Scotland where nothing is decided as yet, with Celtic focusing exclusive on the League while Rangers having to dose their efforts for the UEFA Cup semis and the final-run up to the league.

I Viola

In Italy, I think that the match of the day was Fiorentina - Sampdoria. The Viola, who will be meeting Rangers in the return leg of the Uefa Cup this week, were reached at the last minute of injury time in their match against Sampdoria. This has seen a narrowing, to two points, of their lead over the Rossoneri in the challenge for the last spot for next year's Champion's League. The Bianconeri have gained arithmetic confirmation of their presence in the next Champion's League while the Nerazzuri still have to wait to celebrate the ‘virtually' already won league title.

The Orange

The Barcelona orange shirt is not my favourite and it seems that it did not bring any luck to Barcelona either. Barcelona lost to Deportivo La Corouna on Saturday while the whites of Real Madrid won their match against Athletic Bilabo last night. Barcelona have to show their best during this week's encounter against Manchester United to save an otherwise disastrous season.

The Whites

Valletta, tonight, are expected to get closer to their first title in seven years in the match against Birkirkara. A victory for Valletta tonight, will basically mean that they will be in a position to wrap up their title victory against eternal rivals Floriana. This is possible thanks to Sliema who during the weekend have made the Whites a favour by beating closest rivals Marsaxlokk.

Turquoise

In his traditional turquoise shirt, Rafael Nadal, has won a record fourth Monte Carlo title, beating number one Roger Federer in yesterday's final. The Swiss, who had mononucleosis earlier this year, expressed his satisfaction to be back in winning form, after earlier in the year losing the Australian Open crown. Nadal had not dropped a set in Monte Carlo since beating Federer three sets to one in the 2006 final. His ambition is to keep this almost clean record on one of the oldest clay courts the longest possible.

Let's see what colours will dominate the coming eventful week...
