The recent appointment of Nationalist MP Jeffrey Pullicino Orlando as chairman of the Malta Council for Science and Technology came as a surprise to many.

Nobody doubts Dr Pullicino Orlando's capability to fulfil this role but so many must have missed the call for applications for this post. After all, during the 2008 general election build-up, Prime Minister Lawrence Gonzi made this a highly-publicised prerequisite for all chairman appointments. Unless, that is, this was just a means of appeasing an increasingly-disillusioned MP rather than making a preferential appointment. Anyway, I suppose we all voted for our MPs to be appointed chairmen, or did we?
