This is how Deborah C describes her entry, You Make Me Go UhUh, which she says is very uncommon in style. Being the first time she is taking part in the Malta Eurovision Song Contest, Deborah says that investing time in building the right team to present the song was essential.

“This is the kind of song that can be promoted both locally and abroad. We will take to the stage with vibrant mix of female singers and male dancers, all hailing from different countries. The song, which features the participation of L.James, has a very diverse feel to it; after all, music is a language spoken by everyone.”

You could say that for Deborah, the decision to opt for a career in music was made very early on in life: at the age of five she requested a microphone as birthday gift! Given this interest and Malta’s past performance at the European singing contest, what are Deborah’s views about the lack of a winning trophy from our end?

“Most of the times it was a matter of being unlucky. At other times I felt that the style of the song was all wrong and that other countries had a clear edge on us when it came to creativity and the courage to experiment with new ideas. I get this feeling that our community is scared to go ahead with a new and different style and, more often than not, this is the cause of our downfall.”

As for the unfavourable comments that the Eurovision attracts, Deborah focuses on the voting logistics and echoing what many others have said before her: she believe that  the set up is not very favourable to our country as at the end it is still a matter of obtaining a consistent number of votes from all the countries competing.

“Since the voting system and the geographical position of the countries is unlikely to change and the event is as yet the most prestigious contest in Europe, we need to try to be as good as possible to get the most from the remaining points allocated when the neighbouring countries give their maximum points to each other.”
