In a world that’s strapped for cash but still eager to let its hair down, hostels have become a way to pay-as-you-go on your travel accommodation.

Across Europe, and even beyond, there are hundreds to choose from, ranging from the downright slumish to themed varieties that promise plenty of good-value fun and frolics. Here are some zany favourites.

Kadir’s Tree House – Olympos, Turkey
Remember those dreams you had when you were little of living in a tree house? Well, they’re about to come true. At Kadir’s there are 45 tree houses to choose from – some with two beds, others with more, and bedtime starts with a climb up a wooden ladder.

Once up there the facilities are good and the atmosphere unique. It’s not all monkey business though, Kadir’s is close to the Lost City, Chimera and the famous Olympos Beach.

Kabul – Barcelona, Spain
If partying is on the agenda, then this is the hostel for you. Happy hour here kicks off at 7 p.m., barely a few hours after most of the residents have brushed off their hangovers from the night before. There’s live flamenco, drinking games and a celebratory atmosphere every night of the week.

Located on Plaza Real, you’re right in the heart of Barcelona’s Old City, with the beach and shopping districts just five minutes away.

Villa Saint Exupéry – Nice, French Riviera
Many argue that this should be classed as a boutique hotel but, having retained its hostel prices, it is no wonder that Villa Saint Exupéry has won the honour of being France’s Best Hostel on numerous occasions.

Once a Carmelite monastery, the estate is now run by the Von dem Busscher family and has been transformed to include a lively communal bar and restaurant. There’s plenty to keep guests occupied nearby too, such as the fruit and flower market, the fishing town of Villefranche and Le Chateau.

Praakli Farm – Saaremaa, Estonia
Estonia is a real up-and-coming destination, and now is the time to visit. If rural life is what you’re after, head into the countryside to stay at this great-value, family-friendly farm. You’ll be immersed in Estonian country life, eating homemade bread and jams while watching the lambs frolic and the chickens peck about in the garden.

This is a get-away-from-it-all kind of adventure, with nearby highlights including the stunning hiking and cycling trails, berry and mushroom picking tours, and the Vilsandi National Park.

Carbisdale Castle Youth Hostel – Scotland
If you think budget accommodation can’t be grand, then think again. After all, what can be grander than a castle in the Highlands of bonnie Scotland?

Originally built for the Dowager Duchess of Sutherland, the building has since welcomed all sorts of VIPs and royalty, and now it’s your turn. Aside from the well-equipped rooms, you can live like a queen while exploring the large art collection in the castle’s grand public spaces. Carbisdale is also known for its natural beauty.

The Beagle Houseboat – Amsterdam, Netherlands
You’d be lucky to secure the one four-bed room available on this traditional houseboat, so book early. While the accommodation is basic, the experience will be one to remember, especially as you’ll share the facilities – which include free wi-fi and access to the saloon – with the captain himself. Located within a few minutes walk of Amsterdam Central Station, you’ll also be in an excellent position to enjoy this charming city.

Sepilok Jungle Resort – Sandakan, Malaysia
If you’re going further afield, then splash your cash on getting there and save on the accommodation at this unique hostel resort.

The hostel is enclosed within a tropical virgin rainforest, adjacent to the world-renowned Sepilok Orang Utan Sanctuary. Here it is all about getting back to nature, with thousands of acres of unspoilt land, lagoons and gardens to explore on jungle treks and boat trips.

HI - Ottawa Jail Hostel – Ottawa, Canada
Think staying in a hostel may feel like you’re in jail? Well then, this option hits the nail right on the head: it is a jail. Inmates were housed here from 1862 to 1972, before it was turned into a 110-room hostel with both private and shared facilities. It is within easy walking distance of all the major downtown attractions.

However, this isn’t the place to stay if you’re worried about things going bump in the night: rumour has it mistreated inmates return to haunt the new residents.
