Maltese kickboxer Daniel Zahra recently figured in a world title fight against Bruno Torres, of Portugal, in Lisbon.

The bout, part of the international Biggers’ Better card, was sanctioned by the World Kickboxing Network (WKN) and international rules for professional fighters were applied.

An added incentive was the coverage of EuroSport which dedicates prime time television hours for martial arts events, in particular Biggers’ Better tournaments for combat sports.

Zahra, known as ‘The Jet’, showed great skill and commitment in his fight with Torres. However, the home pugilist got the final verdict from the judges.

A ring rendered slippery from previous bouts, did not help matters but Zahra did well to cope with the conditions and even attacked Torres at crucial stages of the bout.

At the end of a balanced encounter, Torres was declared winner on points, a somewhat controversial decision that was also criticised by EuroSport commentators.

Zahra is now looking to step up his training for next month’s Savate bout. He will be joined by Noel Azzopardi who will also fight in the same discipline of French boxing.

In a statement, the Ying Yang Kickboxing club thanked EuroSport, of Birkirkara, and Xuereb Installations for their assistance.
