Nadur Youngsters opened their second round commitments in style last weekend when they eased past Sannat Lions 3-1 to join Xewkija Tigers at the top of the GFA Division One standings.

The Youngsters took just two minutes to forge ahead when Claudio Antunes’s angled shot was pushed onto the crossbar by Sannat goalkeeper Adrian Parnis but from the rebound Anthony Por-telli was at the right place to guide the ball into the net.

Nadur maintained the initiative with Sannat operating with swift counter-attacks and on one occasion they came close to draw level through Eric Nwankwo.

However, the Youngsters doubled their lead on the stroke of half-time with a fine header from Milos Stojanovic from an Antunes free-kick.

Nadur all but sealed the points three minutes into the second half when Antunes made it 3-0 after a fine solo move.

Just past the hour mark, Nadur were reduced to ten men when Charles Mercieca was dismissed after handling the ball just outside the area.

Sannat came more into the picture and managed to pull a goal back on 74 minutes when a clearance by the Nadur rearguard ricocheted off Lions substitute Josiah Buttigieg with the ball ending into the back of the net.

In the other Division One match played last weekend, Xagħra United and SK Victoria Wanderers shared the spoils in a 1-1 draw.

The match turned out to be a balanced affair with SK Victoria Wanderers creating the better chances through Chris Sciortino and Edinson Sanchez Estrada.

However, on 58 minutes, Xagħra were awarded a penalty when Franco Magrin fouled Sam Frank Bajada inside the penalty area. From the spot, Thiago Dos Santos fired the ball into the Wanderers’ net.

The Citizens surged forward in search of an equaliser but Xagħra remained dangerous in their quick forays inside the opponents’ half.

SK Victoria were denied an equaliser late on when goalkeeper Matthew Vella did well to keep out efforts from Sanchez Estrada and Ajibade Adesina.

But, the Wanderers’ persistence paid off a minute from time when substitute Lauran Dimech fired the ball home with a low shot that flew past the keeper.

SK Victoria could have snatched the three points in time added on but Adesina incredibly shot wide from a good position following a fine move by Sanchez Estrada.

Division Two

In the only match from Division Two, St Lawrence Spurs were surprisingly held to a 1-1 draw by Munxar Falcons.

The Saints were in control for long stretches and took a deserved lead on 56 minutes through Jonathan Micallef.

However, on 69 minutes St Lawrence goalkeeper Samuel Micallef floored Oliver Curmi in the area and the referee awarded a penalty.

Micallef was dismissed and from the resultant penalty Mario Azzopardi drove the ball home to give his side an unexpected point.
