Nadur Youngsters were back to winning ways last week following a narrow, but deserved, 2-1 win over third-placed SK Victoria Wanderers in a Championship Pool match.

The champions are now four points adrift of leaders Xewkija Tigers who they play next on March 9.

The Youngsters were coming from a poor patch but with Milos Stojanovic re-deployed in midfield, the team looked more solid.

Stojanovic, in fact, was instrumental in his team’s victory. He was involved in the action that led to Nadur’s opener and then hit the decisive goal himself.

Nadur took the lead on 10 minutes when Stojanovic broke free of his marker but his attempt at goal was blocked by keeper Simon Agius. The loose ball ran kindly to Saviour Attard who fired home.

The Wanderers’ reaction never materialised and the closest they came to an equaliser was through an attempt by Daniel Bogdanovic who saw his effort cleared off the line by Frankie Camilleri.

Nadur could have doubled their lead on 39 minutes but Brian Meilaq’s strike was turned to a corner in style by Agius.

The Wanderers continued to find it difficult to impose their play as Nadur controlled midfield and also looked dangerous from set-pieces through Elton Da Silva. His efforts were neutralised by Agius.

However, on 68 minutes, the scores became even.

Peter Anizoba dashed inside the Nadur box from the left before releasing Eric Nwankwo who hit home from close distance.

It did not take Nadur long to regain the lead though.

Eighteen minutes from time, Stojanovic was put through by Josef Buttigieg and blasted home.

The Wanderers gave up hope of saving the match even though Joseph Vella could have done better two minutes from time when hitting badly from a good position inside Nadur territory.

The other match from the top flight, between Relegation Pool teams Kerċem Ajax and Munxar Falcons, ended one-all.

Kerċem were unable to convert their territorial superiority into goals as Munxar closed all avenues.

Midway through the first half, Keith Borg surprised Kerċem keeper Leonard Camilleri to put Munxar in the lead.

Munxar looked to be heading towards a much-needed victory in their bid to escape the drop but suffered a blow 15 minutes from time when Samuel Sillato was sent off for a second booking.

Kerċem, who had struggled to create openings until that juncture, hit an equaliser five minutes later thanks to player-coach Sabri Rais.

Rais was on the right spot to head home an Ian Xuereb centre and save his team from defeat.

Division Two

St Lawrence Spurs maintained their march at the top of the Division Two standings with a 2-0 win over Sannat Lions.

The Spurs have now opened a five-point lead over the same Lions in the table.

Sannat opened aggressively but St Lawrence never wilted under the pressure and also went on to open the score on 44 minutes through a Christopher Cauchi header from a free-kick.

Sannat tried hard to avoid defeat but the Spurs held on and sealed victory in stoppage time with a second goal scored by Daniel Pace.

In another match, Żebbuġ Rovers beat bottom-placed Qala Saints 2-0.
