Pembroke Athleta sprinter Alessia Cristina marked her return to the track with an impressive result as she established a new record for the 100m dash in the category for cadet athletes last weekend.
Cristina, who had been sidelined for eight months due to an injury prior to the meet at Marsa, broke the 13-second barrier when clocking 12.81secs.
The previous record, established 12 years ago, stood at 13.14 but 2015 cadet of the year Cristina has now raised the bar to higher levels.
At present, Cristina holds two cadets national records following her scorching 11.37secs run in the 70m hurdles race last year.
Meanwhile, Kurt Zahra, of St Patrick’s AC, also entered the records books for his category when running the 100m in 12.43secs to eclipse the previous best time of 12.53 which belonged to Eric Borg Saywell.
In field events for cadets, Luca Martini (La Salle) established a new mark of 44.65m in the hammer throw and Sarah Chouhal (AS Libertas) did likewise in the girls’ hammer with a throw of 40.66m.
Also in the hammer event, Martina Mamo, of Pembroke Athleta, set a new national record in the youth category with a throw of 33.04 metres.
